Areas of Management Referrals

Keeping the workforce happy, healthy & safe

Occupational Health can help management resolve a situation where an employee’s health may be affecting their fitness to carry out their job role or their job may adversely affect their health.

Complex Medical Needs

We can help the employee and employer identify specific areas in the workplace that may be a challenge for the employee and help find solutions to overcome these difficulties.

We can help the employee with a solution focused return to work programme to rebuild confidence and skills. We can offer advice on support from other agencies to enhance the return-to-work programme.

We can give advice to the employer on what specific triggers may exacerbate the employees condition and how to minimise risks associated with multiple conditions.

Lifestyle issues are addressed sensitively with a supportive approach as these can seriously exacerbate existing medical conditions impacting performance and attendance at work; obesity continues to rise – 26% of adults are obese and Type 2 diabetes is expected to rise from 4 million to 5 million by 2035.

Addictive Behaviours

There are many reasons why addictions begin for an individual. At some point in the journey the type of behaviour or use of a substance can be harmful for the individual or others. Once an addiction gets out of control there is usually a craving for further satisfaction or to achieve a good feeling.

Addictions can have a severe impact on both personal and working life.

We can help an employee identify the effects caused by their addiction and give guidance on how to manage these difficulties and improve the chance of a resolution. We can signpost and provide support for workplace challenges.

It is important to manage workplace stresses and we can give guidance on how to identify triggers and minimise risk.

Workplace Relationship Breakdown

Relationship breakdowns between colleagues and managers can be one of the biggest causes of stress and loss of mental wellbeing both in home and work life. This can have a significant impact on workplace productivity, work performance and can lead to grievances.

In occupational health we consider the impact of medical reasons for loss of performance and productivity and whether the relationship breakdown is impacting on wellbeing. We can give guidance to both employer and employee on how to manage this challenging situation. An early resolution is always in the best interests of all involved.

Employees Returning to Work Following Injuries or Operations

If you have an employee returning to work after an operation, illness, or injury an occupational health advisor will be able to assess your employee’s functional ability and their capacity to perform some or all aspects of their job role.

We can give guidance on a phased return to work with realistic timeframes including reasonable adjustments to their role, support measures and risk assessments. If a full return to work does not seem achievable the advisor can suggest suitable alternative options which may include a review of the job role or flexible working. If the employee is assessed to be permanently unfit for their specific role, then advice on ill health retirement can be given.

Musculoskeletal Conditions

We would encourage you to send any employee with a musculoskeletal condition to us as early as possible. We will assess their condition and make recommendations for appropriate treatment and support available to them. We can give tailored exercise programmes for musculoskeletal conditions, one of our nurses is a qualified fitness instructor.

Mental Wellbeing

We can support employees with mental health conditions by encouraging engagement with services and treatment available to them. There is unambiguous evidence that early intervention results in a more successful return to work and a shorter period of sickness absence. Common mental health conditions are on the increase, especially since the Covid pandemic.

We can give guidance on how to help workers return to work successfully and help employers manage and support this process.

Employee Concerns

We are happy to assess an employee who may have a specific health related concern in the workplace. We have experience in general medical conditions and can give advice and signpost as appropriate.
