Japanese encephalitis is caused by a virus and is transmitted by mosquitos in many areas of Asia, especially rural paddy fields and pig farming areas. The highest rates occur in the rainy season.
The illness can cause minimal symptoms but can also cause severe encephalitis- inflammation of the lining of the brain, and has a high mortality rate.
Vaccination requires 2 doses given 28 days apart. For employees/ travellers at high risk a booster is advised after 12 months and then every 10 years.
Bite avoidance is recommended to minimise risk of exposure.
