Working underground can pose a risk to health. This can be due to the particles mined and the dust generated in the mining process or due to the fact that the worker is underground and may get trapped in an emergency event.
A medical examination should be carried out to ensure the employee is fit enough to work underground and could escape safely in an emergency, or to ensure the employee does not develop any preventable disease due to exposure to respirable particles.
We are able to offer medicals for all miners and also the Rescue mining team.
A mining medical can consist of the following;
Screening questionnaire
Height weight and BMI
Blood pressure
Hearing check
Mobility assessment
Spirometry to assess lung function
Urinalysis
Visual assessment
Skin assessment if hazards present
For a Mine rescue medical the following are added:
Chester step test to assess fitness
Examination by a doctor to check for respiratory and cardiac abnormalities
ECG for first medical
The standards applied to the Rescue team are higher than the normal miners.
