This is a combined vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria and polio and is licensed for over 16 years of age.
This combination is usually given as part of the childhood immunisation programme with a total of 5 vaccines from 4 months to 14 years. The vaccine lasts for 10 years and then a booster is required to maintain an adequate level of protection.
Tetanus is an acute disease caused by the action of tetanus toxin, released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The tetanus spores are found in soil or manure and may enter the body via a puncture wound, burn or scratch. The disease is characterised by generalised rigidity and spasm of the muscles. It is fatal in 10-90% of cases.
Diphtheria is an acute infection usually affecting the nose and throat and is caused by a bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. This condition can cause nose and throat symptoms and also severe difficulty breathing, A toxin is released by the bacterium and this can affect the heart, nervous and adrenal tissues causing paralysis and heart attack.
Polio is an acute illness that is caused by the polio virus being ingested. The virus spreads to the nervous system and may cause a meningitis or paralysis.
We are able to offer Revaxis vaccines to patients of Bradford on Avon Health Centre, over 16 years of age, free of charge under the NHS service.
We are able to offer Revaxis to employees, over 16 years of age, who require this vaccine for workplace protection or work related travel. The employer will be charged for this service.
