Employers are required by law to protect their employees working at height by making appropriate risk assessments and minimising any risks to health and safety.
Employees have a duty to take reasonable care of themselves and others who may be affected by their actions. They must cooperate with their employers to ensure adequate health and safety measures are upheld.
Before a new employee starts their duties working at height it is recommended that they have a medical to ensure they have no medical condition that would increase their risk and that of others.
The medical should be repeated every 3 years, if they develop a new diagnosis that could impact on their ability top function safely in their role and after a long period of sickness absence.
A Working at Height Medical could include any of the following as appropriate:
A screening questionnaire to include hearing, vision, lung function, vibration, medication review, skin, substance exposure.
A medical examination by a nurse or doctor.
Urinalysis
Height weight BMI
Blood pressure
ECG
Audiometry
Visual testing
Spirometry
HAVS Examination
Mobility assessment
Fitness test - Chester Step test.
Blood or urine tests to detect exposure levels if required.
